Have you been told your child needs a specialist Paediatric Dentist? Looking for a children’s dental practice & orthodontist in Cavan, Meath, Louth or Monaghan?
/in NewsPerhaps your general dentist doesn’t treat children and has recommended that your child attend a specialist dental practice for children? Frazer Dental may be a good option for your family’s dental needs. We offer dentistry for the whole family.
Often at Frazer Dental, we meet a parent who attends us with their child after been referred by their local dentist to a specialist Paediatric dentist. The parent attends us having been given an extensive treatment plan which leaves them feeling overwhelmed & wondering what to do. Often the parent has been told that the dental treatment for their child must be carried out under inhalation sedation or general anaesthetic and the parent becomes concerned that no other option is available to treat their child’s dental concerns or the parent feels the treatment recommended for their child is beyond their budget. This is where Frazer Dental may be able to help your family.
At Frazer Dental, Winner of Ireland’s Most Child Friendly Dental Practice at the Irish Dentistry Awards, our team consists of super friendly , dedicated dentists some of which have a special interest in treating children . We open 6 days per week also meaning children can be brought to the dentist after school or on a Saturday so no need to miss school or work to attend dental appointments with your child.
We would be happy to meet you and your child and see if we can work alongside your child and develop a more affordable plan to address your child’s dental needs. Sometimes we will need to dedicate additional time to acclimatizing your child , especially if they have had a previous negative experience. Our aim is to provide dental treatment for your child without the need for sedation, by building their confidence in the dental chair. We will do our best to work along with you and your child.
Has your child additional needs ? Oftentimes children with sensory issues can be treated at Frazer Dental , this may mean need more visits initially to allow us gain your child’s trust but we are willing to try our enhanced acclimatization techniques to ensure the best chance of treating your child with sensory issues successfully in the dental chair at Frazer Dental. We welcome autistic children at Frazer Dental.
We are happy to start by arranging a check up / consultation for your child to see if we can offer a more affordable solution for your child’s dental health needs.

Do your feel your child is missing teeth? Or perhaps their baby teeth are not falling out at the same rate as their adult teeth are forming leading to a crowded mouth with 2 sets of teeth?
In cases such as this , we may need to get an early orthodontic opinion to assess your child’s dental development. A dental radiograph / X-ray may also be required. Early intervention orthodontics is recommended around the age of 7.
What is MIH?
Molar incisor HypoMineralisation is a common condition which tends to develop in children’s teeth around the age of 6-12, when the adult teeth start to appear . It is characterized by the appearance of weakened enamel which is often brown or orange in appearance. The enamel is softer than normal enamel , more brittle , and more prone to decay ,so children with MIH need more regular dental check ups and often require more complex dental treatment which is why bringing your child to the dentist from a young age is very important to allow us diagnose and manage conditions such as MIH before the enamel is becomes too damaged .
The good news is that at Frazer Dental , we offer a full range of dental services from friendly Paediatric dentists, Paediatric dental hygienists, orthodontists , specialist oral surgeon & dental implantologists , meaning the vast majority of your child or adolescent’s dental concerns including MIH can be treated under the one roof here at Frazer Dental.
Has your child a dental emergency? We guarantee to see children in pain same day if you call us early in the morning at 8 am .
Please note all dental care for children & adolescents is private , even if they have a medical card until they turn age 16 , in which case we can accept medical card for teenagers age 16 and over .

Living in fear of the dentist? Frazer Dental offers a range of sedation options to put you at ease.
/in Latest NewsThe hardest part is lifting the phone
The hardest part when you have a dental fear or phobia, is usually getting the courage to lift that phone to make the first appointment. Often these fears start in childhood or adolescence related to a bad experience at the dentist way back then & it is so hard to move past this unless you find a caring, compassionate dentist who takes the extra time to understand your fear. If you can’t overcome the fear totally, you may well need to explore the option of finding a dentist who offers conscious sedation.
Lack of control
Many patients say the ‘lack of control’ they feel in the dental chair is the main reason for their fear, others state it is the noise of the dental drill. Since Covid, we have seen an increase in the number of adults and children put off by the clinical smell of the dental surgery also. It is worrying to see the number of young children who have never been to a dentist at all, and their first visit to the dentist is with a toothache or dental emergency. We recommend bringing children regularly to the dentist from the age of 2 or 3 to ensure they develop a positive experience with the dentist from a young age & to ensure they don’t develop a fear of the dentist as they get older.
Steps to reduce the main fear factors
Modern dental practices have now put steps into place to reduce these 3 main fear factors for our patients. For example in Frazer Dental, we have an open door policy where we invite you to bring a friend with you to act on your behalf if you are worried you won’t be able to talk for yourself whilst in the chair, this is also helpful at the initial consultation as that friend is there with you to make sure you understand what we say and the treatment plan provided. A written treatment plan will be provided. We also play welcoming music in the waiting room, corridors and dental surgery to help create a calming atmosphere. You will notice the calming scent of the diffusers dotted around the practice to create a nice non clinical scent and of course, if it’s the dental drill itself which you hate, we have noise cancelling earphones which we can provide you with to ensure you are not going to be distracted by the drill at all during your trip to the dentist.
Cost is a determining factor
Oftentimes when we have put off a visit to the dentist for a long time, we become anxious about the cost so it is reassuring to know that your local dentist may accept medical card, PRSI & dental health insurances so do contact us with your PPS number so we can see if you are eligible for any subsidized dental schemes. At Frazer Dental, we offer interest free payment plan options for many of the treatments we offer such as endodontics ( root canal treatments ), orthodontics & dental implants.
A lot of dental practices, have taken steps now to make it easier to know what you need to book, for example in our practice Frazer Dental, you have the option to make an appointment online now, without even lifting the phone by clicking onto our website & booking through the online booking system. This is particularly useful if you want to see the available time slots over the coming days & gives you options to book an emergency appointment, a pain appointment or sedation assessment.
If you have left it a long time to attend the dentist, then often we would recommend booking a pain appointment if you have pain or a check up if you don’t have pain and if we feel at initial consultation with you that you are so nervous that sedation might be the best option for you, then we will refer you in house to our sedation dentist, after we have given you a treatment plan and taken the initial X-rays ourselves.
Sedation might be right for you
Sedation is one option to help you overcome your fear of the dentist. Conscious sedation or IV sedation is the most powerful form of sedation offered in general and specialised dental practices. IV sedation also known as sleep sedation is fantastic as you usually don’t remember attending the appointment afterwards. It has the power to make you forget the whole visit to the dentist, so if you opt for IV sedation, you must arrange to have someone bring you home afterwards as you can’t drive or operate machinery for the rest of that day.
IV sedation is most popular
Sedation dentistry is becoming very popular nowadays especially as we are seeing an increase in the number of patients with severe dental phobia who haven’t attended the dentist since they Covid and need many treatments completed at one time. Conscious sedation is particularly useful if you wish to have all your dental treatment completed in 1-2 visits and need lots of treatments done. At Frazer Dental we recommend IV sedation especially for tricky wisdom tooth extractions, anyone requiring multiple fillings, anyone with a Gag reflex and anyone who just feels they can’t cope with having to attend the practice multiple times to have a root canal treatment or other treatments done. A thorough assessment is required beforehand and we require a full medical history including details of all your previous operations and current list of medications before a decision can be made about whether or not IV sedation is the best option for you.
Happy gas & oral sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation (happy gas) and oral sedation are other forms of sedation which your dentist may employ especially for children or teenagers.
The hardest part is lifting the phone to call the dentist if you have left it a long time, so let 2024 be the year you make that call and overcome that fear of the dentist once and for all.

Tips on how to avoid an emergency trip to the dentist this Christmas, although Frazer Dental is open if you need us !
/in Latest NewsSo many of the foods and drinks we enjoy this Christmas are very acidic and can cause tooth erosion. From sparkling waters and fizzy drinks even down to the chocolates and mulled wine, not forgetting the fruit in our Christmas pudding!
With a little bit of planning, however, it’ss possible to enjoy all your seasonal favourites, and maintain a healthy mouth and smile at the same time.”
1. Stop Grazing! Instead of grazing on biscuits or sweets or selection boxes throughout the day, if at all possible enjoy your treats as dessert straight after a meal. We produce more saliva at meal times, which helps rinse away sugary food particles and in turn lowers your risk of developing cavities.
2. Avoid hidden sugars & extra sticky or hard foods
The length of time sugary food stays in your mouth can affect tooth decay. Avoid treats that tend to linger in your mouth, such like sticky candy canes or chewy toffees, as they will stick to your teeth more .The dried fruit in mince pies and Christmas puddings is also high in sugar and likely to adhere to your teeth. Also very hard foods such as granola, popcorn or nuts mean you run the risk of cracking a tooth or filling so be careful when picking the hardest sweet in the tin!
3. Mmm Cheese!
Cheese helps return the mouth to a neutral PH and reduces the chances of developing tooth decay. Even a small piece of cheese after a meal or as a snack can have a positive effect, so we definitely recommend a cheeseboard for dessert!
4. Chew Sugar Free Chewing Gum
If it’s proving hard to get your hands on a piece of cheese after a sugary snack, another great way to increase saliva flow and reduce your chance of tooth decay or erosion , is to chew a piece of Xylitol containing chewing gum such as Orbit Extra. This is nearly as good as going and brushing your teeth!
5. Turkey is our friend
Another tooth-friendly Christmas favourite is Turkey. Turkey is a fantastic source of protein and phosphorous, both of which help your body fight tooth decay and keep your teeth and bones strong and healthy.
6. Drink more water – even tap water!
Where possible, avoid fizzy drinks and even fruit flavoured waters or smoothies that can often be viewed as healthy but tend sometimes to be high in sugar and bad for your teeth. So many drinks/ juices will say no added sugar ( especially those aimed at kids) but if you look closely at the ingredients, there is high level of hidden fruit sugar or sweeteners added.
There is no better drink for our teeth than water, especially if we are having more sugary snacks than usual. Good old tap water will do, and it contains a small amount of fluoride, which itself helps prevent tooth decay.
Drinking plenty of water throughout the festivities will help to dilute any acid attacks caused by sugary snacks or drinks.
Regarding wine , try drinking it with your meal to alleviate potential damage to teeth as opposed to drinking it on its own in between meals. Both red and white wine can stain teeth so be sure to brush well afterwards with a fluoride containing toothpaste to reduce the risk of staining.
7. Don’t forget to brush! Keep in routine.
It goes without saying, don’t forget to keep up your usual oral hygiene routine over the Christmas period. Simply brush twice per day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste ( no need to rinse out the toothpaste with water after brushing) and floss daily. The flossing can be done once per day at any time of day or night : it doesn’t necessarily have to be done straight after brushing.
After eating sugary treats, a good tip is to wait 30 minutes before brushing. Some acidic foods soften your enamel, so if you brush right after eating them, you can risk damaging your enamel further while it is still sensitive. If you are prone to sensitive teeth in general, choosing a toothpaste such as Sensodyne or Duraphat ( available only from dentists) would be beneficial also.
8. Stock up on the Clove Oil
It may be an old wife’s tale but it definitely helps to have some clove oil in the house just in case of a dental flare up. It can ease the pain of a tooth ache or gum abcess, (especially from a sore wisdom tooth) to apply some clove oil directly to the sore area until you manage to contact an out of hours dentist.
If you do encounter an unfortunate dental emergency this Christmas, Frazer Dental in Kingscourt can help. We open the days between Christmas and New Year so don’t hesistate to contact the Frazer Dental emergency advice line, details of which can be found on our website www.frazerdental.ie
